OUR STORY

of a Family-Owned Business

A May’s Farm officially came into being in late 2021 when we bought our own farm, but really it has been developing for as long as we have been on Exmoor together. We are Alex and Anne May and we’re proud to share our little part of Exmoor and what we grow on it with you.

ABOUT US

Alex is a fourth generation farmer and the May family has a rich farming history on Exmoor and the surrounding area. He has always had a passion for farming and was determined that was what he would spend his life doing. Alex was encouraged to go to university to broaden his horizons, and in the end he was very glad that he went.

Anne comes from the Yorkshire Dales and has more of a conservation background. A particular tradition each year was to spend Christmas and New Year in secluded SSSI woodlands in the North York Moors, walking and working in the woods. Alex is delighted that the Appleton crew has descended to Devon and over Christmas we can be found laying hedges and fencing. At lambing time we have many willing assistants from friends and family, thank you all!

We met at Harper Adams University, Alex studied BSc Hons Agriculture and Anne studied BSC Hons Countryside Management. During university Alex spent a year farming in New Zealand and he missed his graduation while on a cattle station in Queensland, Australia. He came back home to farm in late 2015 and by early 2016 we were living at Slattenslade Farm on Exmoor. We’ve now come full circle with our children growing up in the same house that Alex did. We’re very grateful that they can experience this way of growing up and all of the life skills and freedom it can give them.

We farm Slattenslade Farm in Woody Bay with Alex’s father and we own Silkenworthy Farm near Blackmoor Gate, a very exciting purchase for us in 2021. Alex also manages two farms, Aclands and Chapman Barrows, for a family firm. We use social media to keep you updated on our weekly goings-on, so you can see what we're up to at the moment!
